Red Mountain Pass is an exciting albeit highly treacherous trail in Colorado. It is located between San Juan and Ouray County and it earns its name from the nearby Red Mountain which itself earns its name from its iron oxide laden rock.
For anyone considering giving Red Mountain Pass a shot through a Jeep excursion, it’s imperative to keep in mind how dangerous it can be, particularly during the winter months. The pass has a steep eight percent grade and there are switchbacks located on the northern side. Even though the roads are paved, avalanches are not uncommon, which can block access for a considerable amount of time. There is also a section of Red Mountain Pass that’s narrow, winding, and does not have the safety of a shoulder, which creates another layer of danger for inexperienced drivers.
Unless it’s necessary, it may be wise to stay away from Red Mountain Pass until the winter has come to an end, especially if you’re just getting your Jeep feet wet. Seasons like fall and spring are not only safer, they can turn the drive into a wonderfully scenic experience.
