For those that have never experienced Ouray, its mountain trails are essentially a rich paradise of history, topography, and natural scenery practically begging to be seen and discovered. If you’d like to experience some of this for yourself, there are a couple of particular trails worth exploring.
The Alpine Loop consist of 75 miles of trails and dirt roads winding through the majestic San Juan Mountains. These trails were once navigated by Native Americans and it’s not uncommon to come upon fascinating remnants of mills and mining towns. Start at Corkscrew Gulch and then continue into California Gulch to check out Animas Forks, a ghost town that’s remarkably well-preserved.
If you’re a shutterbug, Yankee Boy Basin has incredible vistas of wildflowers during the late spring and early summer season as well as peaceful waterfalls. Make sure to take some time to check out Twin Falls and snap plenty of photos during your trip.
For an easy yet still beautiful trail, visit Brooklyn Road, known for its panoramic vistas of Black Bear Pass, the Red Mountains, and more. Much like the Alpine Loop, the vestiges of mining make for a captivating, perhaps even enriching experience.
