The Soaring Challenge of Black Bear Pass

At more than 14,000 feet, Black Bear Pass or Black Bear Road is arguably the ultimate challenge for off-road thrill-seekers. With its switchbacks, the steep grades, and the massive amount of technicality involved in navigating it, the trail is not for the faint of heart. There are very few if any guardrails to speak of which means safety and the utmost of careful driving is required to navigate this trail meant strictly for those with tons of experience.

Black Bear Pass is a huge challenge but those capable of braving its dangers and soaring heights are in for quite the spectacular sight. The road passes by the highest waterfall in the state of Colorado, better known as Bridal Veil Falls which has gained its reputation for being among the most challenging waterfall ice climbs in the entire continent of North America.

Black Bear Pass is typically open during the late summer to the early fall. If you want to get a glimpse of what it’s like without having to take the risk of traveling it, a YouTube video provides a breathtaking tour of what the experience is like.
