Work Your Way up the Trails

With off-roading, it’s a matter of getting experience and becoming comfortable with the vehicle as well as the terrain. The following trail suggestions are a great way to work your way up from a beginner trail to something that offers greater thrill and difficulty.

Last Dollar Road is great for beginners and it’s truly an incredible drive, particularly during the fall. Traveling from just outside of Ridgway to the Telluride outskirts, the trail will take you through aspen tree-line tunnels, creating a drive that feels as if you were in a live painting. The sunlight becomes a little less intense, and leaves of every color drift around your vehicle.

Once you’re ready to upgrade to a moderate drive, Yankee Boy Basin is one we’ve mentioned several times in the past. Few places offer the vivid vistas of wildflowers as those seen on this trail during the late spring and early summer season. Keep an eye out for the twin waterfall and the cliffs, they’re spectacular sights!

Corkscrew Gulch is a greater challenge than Yankee Boy Basin and will the needs of those who like to be daring but don’t want something too difficult. It begins about ten miles from Ouray and you’ll quickly notice that traveling up switchbacks is a thrill and the views are practically out of this world. The experience only becomes more exhilarating as you climb higher and higher.
