A Brief Introduction to Ouray

heyOuray! We’re going to take a step back today from talking about mountain adventures to give our new readers an introduction into what Ouray, Colorado is all about. Known as “The Switzerland of America”, Ouray is a small town tucked away in the San Juan Mountains. The town is about five hours away from Denver and is known for its cozy ambiance consisting of small shops, boutiques, and eateries nestled among the majestic mountain backdrop.

Ouray was named after Chief Ouray of the Uncompahgre Ute Indian Tribe. He was instrumental in improving diplomacy between the U.S. government while ensuring his people were protected. Chief Ouray passed away in the late 1800s, cementing his legacy as one of Colorado’s most respected historical figures.

In 1877 the first mining camp was established in Ouray, drawing thousands of miners seeking the riches of ore and gold. Ouray would become a pivotal shipping and logistics center for the entire region. Despite this, the town still suffered from a relative inaccessibility. It wasn’t until December 1887 that the Denver and Rio Grand Railway made its way to Ouray. With the eventual emergence of a hotel, Ouray soon became a popular tourist destination.
